"Groople" (Berry Cobbler) from Dorothy and the Four Corners of Magic

When Dorothy attends the Sapphire Jubilee
she happens upon a banquet table covered from end to end
with every kind of blue food imaginable.
One of those foods is a dark blue mush called Groople.
One taste of the blueberry cobbler and she was hooked!

1 pint of fresh blueberries
6 ounces of fresh blackberries
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter

Wash the berries. Pour them into a large mixing bowl. Add the sugar and mix well until all the berries are coated. Let sit 30 minutes so the sugar can bring out the berries' juices.

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the: flour, baking powder and salt. Add the milk and stir. Pour in the melted butter and stir again. Keep mixing until most of the lumps are gone and the butter is no longer pooling along the sides of the bowl.

Pour the batter into a 9x7" baking dish (or 8x8" brownie pan or 10" cast iron skillet) that has been coated with non-stick cooking spray. Spread evenly.

Spoon the macerated berries on top of the batter, making sure to cover every inch of it. Place the dish into a preheated oven and bake at 375º for 1 hour until golden brown and bubbling.

Remove from oven and let sit on counter for 15 minutes before digging in.

Spoon "Groople" onto serving plates and top with ice cream if you like!

Willy Wonka's Chocolate River Sauce

*makes 2 cups

1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
a pinch of salt
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pour sugar and cocoa into a medium-size saucepan. Add salt. Whisk until well combined. Pour in water and turn heat to medium-high. Let it cook until bubbly, whisking constantly. As soon as it comes to a rolling boil, reduce heat to low and let it simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla. Let cool completely.

Pour into a mason jar and store in fridge overnight. It's ready to eat the next day. Pour over ice cream or cake or stir into a tall glass of cold milk.
